We are thrilled to invite the community to the Artful Voices Exhibition, a significant event dedicated to raising awareness about anti -violence among young people. This exhibition will feature creative works from students at various schools in Luton, including poetry, rap, spoken word, and music, all centered around the theme of anti-violence.
Throughout June, we asked thousands of school children from age 9 to 14 across Luton schools to get creative and write a poem, spoken word, rap or speech message that could be turned into an Augmented Reality message spoken by the Knife Angel.
We asked them to think about impact and consequence of violence and knife crime in society and how we can work together as a community and to bring about change against violence, to write this as a message from the Knife Angel to pass on to our community and wider society.
We discussed what the knife angel is as a 27foot sculpture made of 100,000 blades, we discussed where the blades came from and what a surrender bin is. Encouraging an engaged audience to think about the DNA of the Angel and the choices and energy within the blades, and how each blade that the angel is made from has a positive choice to surrender it, to think about the transfer of energy into a positive message. We asked them what their message for change would be to our community and as it travelled to other towns.
They were informed why the Knife Angel was made as activist art to engage communities across the country and how it travels to spread this message.
The students were informed about creating an upstanding community and opening the conversation with knowledge and not fear. - When we have the courage to speak, we have the power to change. We asked the students to create a piece of work that would last 30 seconds long that would be recorded and their message would be spoken by the knife angel via augmented reality.
